Post-doctoral Research Fellowship – Plant metabolomics (Norway)


Nofima is Europe’s largest institute for applied research on fisheries, aquaculture and food. The group has approximately 500 employees and an annual total turnover of about NOK 0.5 billion. Our major owner is the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs. The group’s main office is located in Tromsø, while the research divisions are located in six places: Ås, Stavanger, Bergen, Sunndalsøra, Averøy and Tromsø.

Nofima Mat is one of four business areas in Nofima AS and works with processing of food from sea and soil: food and health, raw materials quality and process optimisation, safe and long lasting food, consumer and sensory sciences, industrial gastronomy and innovation. Nofima Mat has approximately 210 employees in Ås (app. 180) and in Stavanger (app. 30).

Nofima Mat in Ås has a 2.5 years vacancy as a post-doc / project based research scientist on plant metabolomics with main emphasis on health related constituents (secondary plant metabolites) in fruits, berries and vegetables. We are looking for at motivated researcher for further development of our metabolomics platform and our expertise on analytical methods related to food and health.

The main tasks will be developing and standardising protocols for different applications of plant metabolomics (untargeted/targeted, fingerprinting, and profiling) on plant materials produced in other ongoing research projects. Analyses will mainly be based on LC-(qTOF)-MS. Focus areas will be surveying climate and processing effects on the contents in fruits, berries and vegetables. The research scientist will be part of an interdisciplinary team with expertise on the areas analytical chemistry, biochemistry, plant physiology, food technology and bioinformatics.
The candidate has a PhD degree in analytical chemistry, biochemistry or plant science and work experience from relevant areas within analytical chemistry, particularly mass spectrometry, LC-MS and method development. Knowledge of (plant) metabolomics and bioinformatics is desirable.

Postdoctoral Position in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry (IRTA, Lleida, Spain)

One post-doctoral contract is available in the Physiology and Biochemistry group at the IRTA Institute (Postharvest Dpt) located in Lleida.  Applicants must have a PhD in Agriculture / Biology or Food Technology, experience in fruit Physiology and be fluent in English or Spanish. The successful candidate will be expected to have knowledge of non-destructive measurement techniques and their statistical analysis. Priority will be given to candidates that have a PhD from a renowned research group, international experience (stays in foreign countries) and publications in peer review journals with high impact factor. We offer a postdoc contract of 2 years with possibility of extension, work in an internationally oriented group and a salary in function of the CV and experience of the candidate. The position is available from the 1st of January 2011; earlier or later starting dates will also be considered.

Cambodia Agriculture Value Chain Program (CAVAC) is a large agriculture development program which is an Australian Government, AusAID initiative. The CAVAC team is looking for 1 Agriculture Adviser -Agribusiness based in Phnom Penh with travel within Cambodia as required.

Key Responsibilities include coordinating the agribusiness development activities, ensuring detailed implementation strategies and coordinating teams to implement a variety of interventions, providing constructive ideas to ensure target audience sustainably benefits from the project, committing to high productivity of works, demonstrating transparency and integrity in the work place, other duties as reasonably required.

Position Requirements include:
  • Extensive experience in agricultural development and implementing market development programs;
  • A Masters degree in a relevant field;
  • Strong private sector experience;
  • High level analytical skills;
  • Fluent in English and Khmer (written and spoken);
  • Be a “bridge builder”;
  • Excellent interpersonal and general communication skills in Khmer and English;

GRM Job Opportunity: Contract Farm Managers

The Contract Farm Managers will live in regional centres throughout the Western Region of Abu Dhabi. The will work in concert with a number of counterpart National Contract Farm Managers to coordinate and manage the practical activities of the Farm Management Service. The International Contract Farm Managers will support the capacity development of the National Contract Farm Managers so that they are competent and confident enough to take on the position at the cessation of GRM International’s involvement.

The Contract Farm Managers will report directly to the ADFSC Contract Farm Management Manager who in turn reports to the ADFSC Regional Manager.


Role and Responsibilities:


• Facilitate the development of whole farm plans for each nominated client farm

• Formulate production plans for each client farm based on market information, physical feasibility and economic viability.
• Provide management, supervision, instruction and advice to farm workers to implement production plans.
• Identify appropriate farm inputs to enable efficient production and assist management to find appropriate means of supply for these inputs.
• Identify plant and equipment requirements necessary to carry out farming activities and articulate are carried out efficiently and effectively.
• Implement planning, monitoring and evaluation procedures to ensure farm management activities are carried out efficiently and effectively.
• Visit contracted farms regularly to monitor activities.
• Provide brief monthly reports to management on progress of activities.
• Provide a comprehensive report on each farm at the end of the season to contracted farmers and management.
• Identify opportunities for improvement in the skills and knowledge of National Contract Farm Managers, ADFSC extension staff and farm workers and articulate this information to management.
• Assist to identify and implement innovative farming practices that contribute to increased production, economic and water use efficiency.
• Use practical experience to provide input into the ADFSC extension program.
• Coordinate with FSC staff and equipment in the regional centres to carry out farm management activities.

Qualifications and Experience:


• At least diploma level further education in a related field.

• Experience in one or more of the following farm production activities:
o Field Crop production in an arid and saline environment.
o Intensive livestock production in an arid and saline environment
o Fodder production in an arid and saline environment.
• Experience in the development and implementation of whole farm plans and production plans.
• Experience in supervising staff and developing capacity will be highly regarded.
• Experience in the delivery of agricultural extension programs will be highly regarded
• Language skills in English (essential), Arabic or Urdu or Bengali (preferred)
Attributes:

• A proven ability to learn and adapt to difference farming systems under difficult farming conditions

• Ability to work and live in remote areas under difficult conditions
• Ability to work and make decision under field conditions remote from management.
• Self starter, able to work under own management.
